Teaching & Learning Team
The Directors of CTI, who have a broad background in education and training, environmental and sustainability management, risk management, international business and strategy and management consulting, recognised the need for development of specialist training in “green skills”, specifically in relation to the management of carbon.
As the great proverb goes: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.”
So the CTI team set out to build a carbon-responsive workforce.
CTI decided the best way to do that was build organisation capacity through the VET system. Staff could learn how to build and implement whole-of-organisation carbon management strategies whilst using real-time data from their workplaces and engaging key staff to help them.
CTI was incorporated in October 2008 and applied to VETAB in NSW for permission to develop a Certificate III and Certificate IV in Carbon Management. The courses were developed during 2009 and pilot courses were conducted in mid-2009 and early 2010. The pilot courses as well as input from an industry panel helped shape the content of the course which for the Certificate III comprises 8 units of competency and for the Certificate IV, 12 units of competency.
Accreditation of the courses was granted by VETAB in May 2010 and delivery of the first course commenced in Melbourne in May 2010.
Since the qualifications were nationally accredited some 450 students have completed or are part-way through the Certificate III and Certificate IV courses and over 100 more students are currently in the process of enrolling for courses commencing in mid-July 2011.

Winton Evers
Teaching & Learning Team
Winton Evers
Formerly a TAFE facilitator in Demolition Supervision, Asbestos Awareness & Construction Induction. Winton has been concerned about anthropogenic impact on the environment for sometime. To do something significant, his former demolition company – Becwins - maintained a building materials recycling yard which received rescued re-usable building materials normally destined for landfill. Many houses in the Blue Mountains now have those re-claimed materials incorporated into their structure because of Winton’s work.
From a social perspective, Winton was conscious of the safety of his personnel in a highly dangerous industry. It was from here that he embarked on various innovations in safe demolition methodology which eventually led to his facilitation role in safety at TAFE.
When Winton came across the GHG Accounting Standard he realised how much organisations could improve their financial and environmental performance by managing their carbon emission sources.
Winton has an M.Sc., major in Climate Change & Sustainable Resource Management, B. Comm. and completed the CTI Certificate IV course in Carbon Management in late 2010. Since then he has trained well over 100 students at Certificate IV level so far.
